The Monoyer chart and what 10/10 does not tell you

In France, distance vision is measured at 5 metres on the Monoyer chart, graded from 1/10 to 10/10. Reading the 10/10 line corresponds to visual acuity considered normal.

What 10/10 does not tell you

  • contrast sensitivity
  • night vision
  • the extent of the visual field
  • colour vision
  • the health of the back of the eye

10/10 is a threshold of normality, not a maximum: some people can read beyond it. Its English-language equivalent is 20/20, on the Snellen chart.

Illustration: letters and sizes are indicative. The measurement is taken at the practice, at 5 metres, with a standardised chart and lighting; this image does not replace that test.
