Astigmatism: vision distorted along one axis

Test image as seen by an astigmatic eye, then after correction. A regular grid and the word VISION serve as the test image. For the astigmatic eye, the image is sharp in one direction and stretched, blurred in the perpendicular direction; an axis is shown. Astigmatic eye: the cornea is not regularly curved. The image is sharp in one direction and distorted, blurred in the perpendicular direction.

After correction: toric glasses, a toric implant or the laser act on the precise axis of the astigmatism. The image becomes sharp again in every direction.

Diagram for guidance. The assessment measures the exact axis and degree for each eye. Results vary from one patient to another.
