Red eye: what might it be due to?

A red eye is rarely serious, but the appearance of the redness points towards the cause. Choose a situation: the illustration and the colour marker change to help you tell them apart. This overview does not replace an examination.

The eye seen from the front

Red eye according to the cause Front view: the colour and the distribution of the redness (diffuse pink, dull band, bright red patch, ring around the iris) differ according to the cause.

    When to seek urgent care

This guide does not make a diagnosis. Intense pain, reduced vision, marked sensitivity to light, halos, or a red eye after an injury or after wearing contact lenses: seek advice without delay.
