Eyelid hygiene in three steps

Blepharitis is an inflammation of the edge of the eyelids. Eyelid hygiene is its long-term treatment.

Anterior blepharitisAt the base of the lashes, often linked to bacteria or greasy dandruff.
Posterior blepharitisThe meibomian glands, just behind the lashes, become blocked and produce a thickened oil.
  1. Warmth

A warm compress or a heated eye mask on the closed eyelids for a few minutes, to soften the secretions.

  2. Gentle massage

The upper eyelid downwards, the lower one upwards, always towards the edge of the lashes, to help the glands empty.

  3. Cleaning

The edge of the lashes, with a compress or a suitable product, to remove crusts and scales.

Once or twice a day at first, then once a day for maintenance. Improvement often takes several weeks, and maintenance helps prevent relapses.

Artificial tears and prescription treatments add to eyelid hygiene if needed. A localised lump on the eyelid (stye, chalazion) calls for different management.
