What has made LASIK safer

Three technical advances have reinforced the safety of LASIK. They do not replace the pre-operative assessment: it is the assessment that shows whether your eye is suitable.

Before: a blade Today: a laser mechanical blade femtosecond laser
laser paused the laser only fires when the eye is centred

The laser-cut flap. The corneal flap is cut with a femtosecond laser instead of a mechanical blade (microkeratome): a cut with micrometre precision, reproducible from one eye to another.

Eye tracking. During the treatment, an eye-tracking system follows the micro-movements of the eye. If the eye moves, the laser stops by itself: the risk of a decentred treatment is greatly reduced.

A tailored treatment. The treatment is not standardized: it is calculated from the map of the optical defects specific to each eye (aberrometry).

These advances reduce the risks; they do not eliminate them. Complications remain possible and are discussed during the consultation.
