Self-monitoring

The Amsler grid: testing your central vision

A simple test, to do at home, to monitor the macula (central vision). It does not replace an examination, but it helps to spot a change early — particularly in the case of AMD.

How to do it

  1. Keep your reading glasses on if you wear them.
  2. Place the grid about 30 cm away, well lit.
  3. Cover one eye, then stare at the central dot without moving your gaze.
  4. Do the lines look straight and continuous to you? Start again with the other eye.
